Hello you all,

If you aren't already, come follow me on flickr. I'm not posting as often on deviantart. This website isn't what it once was, or maybe I'm simply growing out of it? Flickr is more fitting for me now, and you'll see that I have quite a bit more work there anyways.

I literally have thousands of new images from my time here in Spain, and I plan on putting together a massive book of my adventures when i return to the states.
In the meantime I've been planning out images and a giant b&w film series for next summer. I'm thrilled about it. The winters are my quiet time when it comes to pictures, but it's when the inspiration builds. Come summer, the picture taking explodes. (well, hopefully)

I am selling my only zoom lens:
Nikkor AF-S VR 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED
$450 or best offer! Shipping is included. I will also be including a free, signed 5x7 inch print of your choice.

This lens is practically brand new. No dents, scratches, etc. I bought it for a wedding last summer and have maybe used it 10 times since. It is an all around great zoom lens; I am simply selling it because it has become extremely lonely in my camera bag. I find little use for a zoom and desperately want a new prime lens.

Note me if you're interested. Unfortunately I am only dealing with sales in the US.

I don't know who reads my journals anymore, but I wanted to write one to simply say thank you. Thank you to all who support me by following my work, commenting, or giving favorites. Thank you to the newcomers and to those who have stuck with me from the beginning. I realized that I have been on deviantart (and flickr) for 5 years now. These websites have played a huge role in my growth as an artist. I read and appreciate all the comments. Always I am inspired. And thank you dearly to those who have thought and prayed for my cousin Sophia. She is doing better now; radiation treatment was a success.

This summer has been an important one. Things are changing, and everything looks different to me now. My approach to photography has changed, I'm more inspired than ever, and I have a sense of which direction I want to take my images. Lots of new work, some of which I would like to keep holed up for awhile. But more images will come soon.

Hope you are all staying inspired.

Technical help (RAW and such)

I can't believe how long I have been into photography and I have just stepped into the field of RAW. Woops.
But I am having issues, as I'm technology-impaired. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if this will make any difference, but a little technical info beforehand: I shoot with a d700 and use adobe bridge and photoshop cs3. I also have Nikon's ViewNX, which came with the camera... but I rarely touch this program.

Anyway, I did a small shoot yesterday and had everything recorded in RAW + JPG

1. I have downloaded the images and am having technical problems all around. To begin with, the RAW images look much more saturated and sharp compared to the JPG when I view them in bridge or photoshop. Why is this? How do I change it and get them to look normal/the same? When I view them in View NX, they look exactly the same, but the program doesn't let me open them in photoshop.

2. Why are the RAWs being recorded in a different color profile? All of my other work is recorded in sRGB, but the RAW was recorded in Adobe RGB. I don't get the differences here. Is there a way to change the color profile for raw on my camera?

3. Why are my RAW dimensions larger, but taken at 240ppi (vs 300ppi in JPG)?

I'm sure I will have more questions, but this is it for now. Thanks in advance for the help!

Some of you may remember my sweet cousin Sophia's story. Three years ago they found a tumor in her brain, around the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus. After surgeries, weeks in the hospital, and an outpour of prayers and support, the tumor was successfully removed. Sophia is now ten years old.

I never imagined that I would be writing something like this again, but we found out early this week that two tumors have recurred around the hypothalamus. The feelings are heart-wrenchingly unexplainable. The only thing I can do is to pray and ask for all of you to please, please keep Sophia and her family in your thoughts and prayers. The next steps are to make decisions about the tumor removal... many things are unknown at this point.

I have uploaded a rather recent photograph of her. Please feel free to pass it on, post it on your blogs, send it emails. You can link back to my deviantart/flickr, as I'm sure I will have updates, but more importantly, my aunt and uncle regularly update her CaringBridge website, with day to day journals on everything that is going on. _{Just updating this for the sake of updating.

Life is good. Life is busy. Life here is cold and rainy. I miss photography terribly as I do everything and everyone at home. I will be seeing them soon though so hopefully pictures will ensue.

I've still been doing a tiny bit of darkroom work, but I've mainly been testing HP5 to the max. If I have to shoot another roll of gray cards I might explode.

The goal for next year is to have an exhibition under my belt.

And my goal for the evening is to write my philosophy paper. Damn Nietzsche!

Hope you all are well. As always, thank you so much for the continued support -comments, favs, etc etc. Though I do not respond to everything, I read and appreciate every bit of it.

Hello all,
I was wondering if I could have recommendations for computer color calibrators. It's quite stupid that after all these years I haven't figured this out, but I'm getting tired of editing with the hope that prints will come out matching what I see on the screen. I've heard that Sypder is good...?? are there major differences between Spyder 2 and 3?

Also, does anyone know much about connecting a second screen to a laptop? Last time I tried to do that, the colors on the external monitor became very desaturated and weird.

I can't believe my first year of college is over. It is a blur, and I can't believe how fast it went by. I had such an incredible experience, met so many people, learned so many great things.
The school year was busy as hell, but it ended well, and towards the end, I came to appreciate the darkroom more. Having experimented with different films, papers, and developers, I finally started to get a look that is not possible with digital printing. The results made it exciting and worth it.
So now I am back home to the place I love, and it's time to reacquaint myself with everything once again. I have spent the day cleaning and reorganizing my room, trying to make it feel less abandoned and more comfortable, after spending 9 months away.
The summer will be full of working to save money for school. But I also plan on buying a new camera, reading (a lot), taking pictures, refreshing my portfolio, spending time outside, bike rides, time with the family and friends. I have various series ideas I want to work on as well, and I am (hopefully) going to borrow my neighbor's large format camera! Scary.

Summer is here and I am happy

Work is so often flooded with favorites around here, with very little commenting to go along with it. This has always been an issue, but it's gotten progressively worse. It gets so easy to simply press the fav button and move on. Yes, deviantArt and flickr are great resources for finding inspiration, but shouldn't they also provide the grounds for positive and negative feedback? Of course I've fallen into this comfortable trap of quickly faving and moving on, but I'm going to be more conscious of leaving a thoughtful comment when I can.
I appreciate favorites, don't get me wrong, but I'm more curious to hear why you may hate or like a particular piece. And I want to see more opinions on other people's photographs as well!

Ok, I'm done complaining. Homework time.

Ummm. Well I am 2/3 of the way finished with my first year in college. That is craziness right there. An extremely busy week of finals is over and I am headed home for a bit tomorrow. Spring break has come at a perfect time. I'm going kind of crazy here. That, and I'm anxious to be back with the family and shoot some digital.
I plan on completely refreshing my portfolio this coming summer. I've been inspired lately and have been sketching lots of ideas that will hopefully work out. My ultimate goal is to present the work to some curators next year and have some kind of exhibition, but who knows!
I enjoyed my time in my black and white darkroom classes, for the most part. It's definitely good to know all of that, but I've come to the realization that I am certainly a digital person. It's cheaper, faster, and I have much more control.

That's all for now I guess. Time for major cleaning and laundry.

A New Year

Wow, it's been awhile since I have written one of these. It was a good year for me overall. Graduated from highschool, went to spain, learned a lot from my summer photo clients, and started college -which has been grand. Oh, and I saw Annie Leibovitz which basically completed my life. I'm excited to see what 2009 has up its sleeve.
I'm starting my first b&w film/darkroom class on the 5th, which I'm really looking forward to. It will be so nice to get back into photography, and I can't wait to experiment with film and pretend to be Sally Mann in the darkroom.

Thanks to everyone who keeps up with my work and takes the time to comment and all. Much appreciated. Hopefully new work will come... soon.

Calibration Help - please!

About a month ago i purchased a macbook for college. I basically need help/ any information you may know about calibrating the screen in general. I know absolutely nothing about this -how to do it, where to go to do it, what numbers(?s) to enter, if anything should be purchased (if so, good and quite cheap, i'd hope)?
I know laptops aren't the ideal editing platform due to the screen's brightness issues. I would like to be able to do some editing while i'm away and without an external monitor though. Everything on the screen looks good as it already is, although it is definitely too bright and slightly oversaturated which hasn't made editing very easy/possible.
Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated! I'm clueless here.

Got back from spain (which was incredible by the way) a few weeks ago. Now i'm back to the normal life- working, saving for college, playing, and trying to take pictures.

A long time ago I had done one of those 'ask me anything' journals. For some strange reason, I just thought it would be fun to do again.

Crazy, exciting May

I can't believe May has already arrived. Where have these past few months gone? It is crazy, exciting, terrifying, and bittersweet to think that my high school is coming to an end. It is also nice to finally know where I will be going to college next year.
A lot will be going on over the next few weeks including: finishing my senior thesis, finishing my senior portfolio/presentations, finals, graduating, and leaving for Spain in June.
Annndddddd.... I will finally be meeting my great friend Maria ( ~EvilxElf ) next weekend. Will be so, so much fun.

And be prepared for many photos upon my return

probably will be like that for quitee awhile, seeing that i can't buy one right now.
On another note, I'm on spring break and have lots of photos planned for the week. I think.
I have nothing interesting to say, but what's new. my journals are pointless - except for the wonderful dose of inspiration.
